The Power of Visual Arts

According to the latest survey conducted by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA), people seek art therapy for a wide range of challenges—highlighting just how versatile and impactful this practice can be.

The survey identifies the most common concerns clients bring to art therapists:

  • Mood and anxiety disorders — 42%
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — 29%
  • Behavioral disorders — 23%
  • Severe mental health conditions — 18%
  • Trauma related to sexual violence — 17%
  • Addiction and substance use disorders — 16%
  • Grief and loss — 14%
  • Stress management — 15%
  • Autism spectrum disorders (including Asperger’s syndrome) — 11%
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — 11%
  • Cancer-related support — 8%
  • Chronic physical (somatic) illnesses — 7%
  • Support for survivors of domestic violence — 7%
  • Eating disorders — 7%
  • Acute illnesses and physical injuries — 6%

These findings demonstrate that art therapy is not limited to a single type of issue—it supports individuals across a broad spectrum of mental, emotional, and physical health challenges.

By engaging in creative expression, people can process complex emotions, reduce stress, and find new ways to understand their experiences. Visual arts offer a safe, non-verbal language for healing—one that can reach places words often cannot.
